Worm Window

This was an entry into the 2005 Art of Science Competition at Princeton University. This piece was compiled in Photoshop but non of the color or texture of the nematode images was altered. Read the creator's explanation below.

This work is based on the rose window of St. John the Divine, NYC. Each segment of the image is an image of the microscopic nematode, C. elegans. The red images were generated by staining the animals with a dye called rhodamine-phalloidin, which lights up actin, a protein found predominantly in muscles. The blue is a DNA stain called DAPI, and the green comes from expressing the jelly fish protein GFP transgenically in the nematodes. The grayscale images are mainly of C. elegans embryos or dissected C. elegans organs. Although the work was assembled using Photoshop, none of the image is pseudocolored.

This weeks Sci-Art Site of the Week is Chronoscapes. I found Pery Burge's art on Flickr and absolutely loved her form of expression. She uses the science of fluid dynamics within water combined with various colors of ink to create these wonderful images. For a more complete understanding of her method check out her site.

I continue investigating radial spreads of ink in water. These spreads can be seen in both artistic and scientific terms. New photographic equipment has enabled me to examine these forms more closely, and the use of different inks within one spread enables me to see its different aspects more clearly. Descriptions of how various inks behave when used together, the types of polyhedral shapes that may result, inner structures, and the effects of relatively high speeds on ink flow, are followed by a section on various ink textures - this section is both scientific and artistic. Finally I look at artistic aspects of radial spreads: creating “time-rich” images, and making visual connections between the spreads and organic life-forms and cosmic phenomena respectively.

"This is a prepared slide that I found in an old dusty box. The slide is dated April 5, 1897 and contains exactly nine diatoms of three different types, meticulously arranged into an ornate pattern. The botanist that prepared this slide near the turn of the century was F.F. Forbes. The label on the slide reads "Diatoms in center from Hammonds Pond Brookline, Mass. Navicula peripunctata"."

This ball reminds me of the menacing ball in the movie Phantasm. It does have strange markings and who knows if it is capable of levitation? Could it really be this ball of horror?

Periodic Table as Art? You Betcha!

This week's SOTW comes from the mind of an artist that goes by the name AzureGrackle aka Jennifer Schmitt.

Where does inspiration come from? Well for Jennifer it came in the form of previous artwork laid out for review on the floor and noticing that the layout of the prints resembled a Periodic Table of the elements. This connection between art and science might have been missed if the artist's mother hadn't been recently retired from teaching high school chemistry and physics for 30 years.

Once an artist is inspired Zymurgy's first law of evolving system dynamics takes over. What is this law? Well it states that "Once you open a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is to use a larger can." The idea was out there and there was no going back so Jennifer put the word out and the result is fantastic. For more insight into this project read an interview with Jennifer in Etsy.

"Ninety-six printmakers of all experience levels, have joined together to produce 118 prints in any medium; woodcut, linocut, monotype, etching, lithograph, silkscreen, or any combination. The end result is a periodic table of elements intended to promote both science and the arts."

Fractal Friday

Explanation: What creates the cosmic dust sculptures in the Rosette Nebula? Noted for the common beauty of its overall shape, parts of the Rosette Nebula, also known as NGC 2244, show beauty even when viewed up close. Visible above are globules of dark dust and gas that are slowly being eroded away by the energetic light and winds by nearby massive stars. Left alone long enough, the molecular-cloud globules would likely form stars and planets. The above image was taken in very specific colors of Sulfur (shaded red), Hydrogen (green), and Oxygen (blue). The Rosette Nebula spans about 50 light-years across, lies about 4,500 light-years away, and can be seen with a small telescope towards the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros).

Plasma Pong

What was the first video game to achieve widespread popularity in both arcade and home console versions, and launched the initial boom in the video game industry? You guessed it, Pong by Atari.

How is this first video game associated with my pick for Site of the Week? The site selected this week is the home of Plasma Pong. You heard me pong has been brought into the 21 century!

The game was created by Steve Taylor. He describes the game by saying,

"PLASMA PONG is a variation of PONG that utilizes real-time fluid dynamics to drive the game environment.

Players have several new abilities that add fun twists to the classic game. In the game you can inject plasma fluid into the environment, create a vacuum from your paddle, and blast shockwaves into the playing area. All these abilities have fluid-based kinetic effects on the ball, making Plasma Pong a fast-paced and exciting game."

I couldn't find any alliance that I felt comfortable joining, so I decided to start an alliance that will benefit the many unique blogs out there that combine science and art.

The Sci-Art Bloggers Alliance is one way to get your blog "out there," where others that share similar interests can find your blog.

Definition

Sci-Art Bloggers is a loose association of bloggers for whom blogging is a labor of love and the topic of the blog remotely connects science and art.

While I love fractal art I wish this alliance to be broader than just fractals. Niche Photoblogs covering nature, urban, food etc.. would be nice additions. Anyone that finds art in science is welcome. Beautiful art can be found in the natural, physical, culinary, urban, social sciences etc...

Purpose

To allow amateur bloggers to provide support (both moral and traffic related) to one another.

I) To be eligible to become a Sci-Art Blogger one must

Have a blog, I will not allow pure "store fronts" in the alliance.
Keep that blog relatively family-friendly (PG-13 ok).
